About Washington County

Washington County was created on March 28, 1781, from part of Westmoreland County and named in honor of George Washington. Washington, the county seat, was laid out in 1781, incorporated as a borough on February 12, 1810 and chartered as a city in 1924. Washington County is situated in the southwestern section of Pennsylvania, west of the Monongahela River.

Shoppers will be delighted with the outstanding antique and specialty shops throughout the area. Water enthusiasts will enjoy fishing and boating along the Monongahela River or any of the lakes. Visitors will also find both exciting and leisurely entertainment. From Ladbroke at the Meadows horse racing to star-studded entertainers at the Coca-Cola Star Lake Amphitheatre or a visit to the Iceoplex - a new dimension in Ice Arenas - the official training center of the Pittsburgh Penguins, you will always enjoy Washington County. Washington County boasts sixteen golf courses, including Quicksilver, a championship quality course that serves as home to the Pittsburgh Senior Classic PGA tour.

You will find here a land not only rich in history and tradition, but moving into the future.
This wonderful mix of old and new will make your visit to Washington County exciting and pleasurable. (PA Visitors Network -- http://www.pavisnet.com/washington/are.html)
